Please Describe Your Project In Detail | I am a hairstylist and salon owner in chattanooga, pivoting my business model like so many at this time , due to severe staff shortages . I have designed and manufactured barber /hairdressing capes to see how they sell . Well so far so good . Since I have worked out a few kinks ( excuse the pun ) with the first round . I am ready to design and order more to sell . The problem is I had to get the made in China . My next move is to make the capes out of recycled fabric and make them local . A client of mine has given me the info of a someone that recycles plastic in NY as I am still searching for a local fabric manufacturer . This comes with a cost which is why I am reaching out to see what grants could be available to me . I am also the US distributor for mannequin heads to hairstylists /Cosmetogy schools etc for a company in France . There is a market for these products in the beauty industry and I have what know to be a unique plan for these products. |
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue Plan | Nobody is making these products sustainable . It can be done but it is going to require more money than I am currently paying to have this work done in China . The first of its kind . Recyclable , sustainable products for the beauty industry from Chattanooga. I would be so proud ! |
Where would your project take place? | Chattanooga and so far New York but I am hoping to have them made in TN |
How much will your project cost in total? | 50.000 |
Do you have any matching funding sources from other local governments, private entities, non-profits, or philanthropic entities for your project? | No |
Please describe the source and list amounts of any other funding.
What portion of the project are you asking the city to fund?
If funded, when would your project start? | November 17, 2021 |
How long would your project take to complete? | 6 months |
What milestones would you use to measure your project’s progress? | I have established a need for the products and where to sell them . Now I need to make them sustainable . Milestone 1) Meet with manufacturer 2) Discuss turn around time 3) Business plan and forecasting 4) Marketing 4) Distribute 5) Sell 6) Monitor sales , marketing 7) Circle back around and improve products where we need to and customer relations . 8) Order again |
How would you ensure accountability and transparency throughout the project lifecycle? | This project is to feed my family so I hold my self accountable . I am in also business with my mother in law and we have monthly meetings with the amazing Josh Brown at the TSBDC . We keep on track by weekly meetings in house and monthly meetings with Josh . |
If successful, how would your project benefit the community? | Chattanooga has such a vibrant arts community and I have a vision of the capes being designed by local artists and will pay the artist commission on each cape . In your average hair salon we see clients from all walks of life and we can raise awareness for local artists , in person and on many social platforms . The thought of having hairstylist support there arts community would be amazing . To have a unique sustainable business will highlight us and Chattanooga and give us a platform to encourage new small business here . |
How will you attract community buy-in for your project? | The buy in would be to manufacturer recycle plastics here in Chattanooga . My contacts are leading me to New York . We have the space here in Chattanooga , why can’t we do it here ? |
