Please Describe Your Project In Detail | Goat Rescuers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to the caring and well-being of mistreated or unwanted goats or goats that simply need to be re-homed. I am currently housing 26 barnyard animals, including horses, goats, chickens and a donkey in a 3-stall barn. These are animals that needed to be rehomed within the last year and 1/2, since Covid. I am seeking funds to expand the barn to ensure shelter and the safety of these animals. We want to provide a loving and caring home for these goats and barnyard animals due to circumstances beyond the owners control or for animals that have been abused or mistreated. We accepted our first animal in July of 2020 with the adoption of a 200 pound Nubian goat, Billy. He was very friendly and loved, but needed to be re-homed due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the owners control. It was strictly through word of mouth during the Covid-19 crisis that I realized that many owners could no longer care for these beautiful animals and I wanted to provide a safe alternate environment where they knew their beloved pets, in many cases, would be well taken care of and loved in a secure and friendly habitat. It’s been a busy 2021 so far this year. We are fortunate all our animals are thriving, and our little goat family is growing. We have rescued/adopted an additional 8 goats so far this year: Welcome: Precious, Hachi, Carlos, Willie, Vincent, Lily, Bruce & Fern |
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue Plan | The Chattanooga area was hit by devastating tornados in April of 2020 which destroyed many homes and displaced many people and their animals. I also realize many other areas of the country have been affected by destruction and devastation with hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, riots, unemployment and unfortunately Covid-19 is still lingering and many folks have lost income or possibly employment and continue to struggling financially. I really had no intention of starting an animal rescue center, but after my family started posting pictures of the new farm, we began to be approached by individuals and families that could no longer care for their precious animals and strictly by word of mouth and social media posts within 6 short months we now have and adopted 10 goats, 4 horses and 9 chickens, which I supply their fresh eggs for any families in need in our community through Nextdoor Neighbor. |
Where would your project take place? | 255 Paytn Lane, Rock Spring, Georgia |
How much will your project cost in total? | 45000 |
Do you have any matching funding sources from other local governments, private entities, non-profits, or philanthropic entities for your project? | No |
Please describe the source and list amounts of any other funding.
What portion of the project are you asking the city to fund?
If funded, when would your project start? | December 6, 2021 |
How long would your project take to complete? | 3 weeks |
What milestones would you use to measure your project’s progress? | My greatest milestone measurement will be when I don't have to locate and bury goats, that I have rescued from Covid-19 victims, that have been attacked, maimed and killed by predators. When all the animals on the farm, currently 26, have adequate shelter to keep them warm and dry and more importantly safe and alive. |
How would you ensure accountability and transparency throughout the project lifecycle? | Since inception all expenses have been carefully recorded to ensure accurate records and effective cost accounting policies and procedures. Every single expense has been meticulously tracked and sorted by category. I also have all original receipts from every purchase that can be produced for verification upon request. |
If successful, how would your project benefit the community? | Our goal is to work with local animal shelters, including the McKamey Animal Shelter and the Humane Educational Society in Chattanooga and other rescue centers to help relieve them of any barnyard animals they have in their facilities. Out local animal shelter, McKamey Animal Shelter has received horses, ponies, donkeys and pigs. I believe most people in the community think of McKamey as just a dog and cat facility, but unfortunately that is just not the cast. I currently am the only goat rescue and barnyard animal rescue facility in the area. Try to rehome a horse or 200 pound goat is a much harder feat than rehoming a cat or dog. |
How will you attract community buy-in for your project? | Many people already in the Chattanooga area are aware of my organization and I would like to expand and get involved more with the community including opening up my facility to home schooling field trips and other outdoor education programs. I would also like to partner with local animal shelters to help relieve them of over-populated facilities and kill shelters. I have also worked with a local church to supply food and fresh eggs for Christmas food baskets in 2020 and it is noted in my webpage that I have free farm fresh eggs for anyone in the community in need. |
