Please Describe Your Project In Detail | Bring fresh food to the district 5 community. Shift the balance toward food equity in Chattanooga. We want to Provide a healthy food source, fulfilling jobs, and nutrition resources for residents. The community would have say so in what items are available and will work to provide for the neighborhood. Build a coalition with motivated people who share a mission centered on people over profits - but profits are in there to keep the enterprise thriving. |
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue Plan | To Provide a Healthy Food source and Stable Jobs for residents of District 5 |
Where would your project take place? | District 5 and District 9 Brainerd/East Dale Neighborhoods |
How much will your project cost in total? | 100000 |
Do you have any matching funding sources from other local governments, private entities, non-profits, or philanthropic entities for your project? | No |
Please describe the source and list amounts of any other funding.
What portion of the project are you asking the city to fund?
If funded, when would your project start? | February 15, 2024 |
How long would your project take to complete? | 1-2 years |
What milestones would you use to measure your project’s progress? | Sustainable jobs for the community, food coverage for the area that is currently a food desert, and useful health and wellness resources that align with the needs of the community. |
How would you ensure accountability and transparency throughout the project lifecycle? | It would be a democratic organization controlled by its members who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions. Residents and workers will serve as elected representatives and are accountable to the membership. There would be open meetings and regular communication about decisions in the works and how those decisions are made. |
If successful, how would your project benefit the community? | Provide Food for Residents of District 5 and beyond, start to reverse food inequality, and provide a source of living wage jobs for neighbors. Co-ops can introduce community organizing to make changes and build the world we deserve. Residents will see power in the people's hands and We believe this makes a bold statement in our city. Local access to better quality foods than what is currently available on a daily basis in Brainerd will improve the health of our community. Many of the chronic diseases that plague people, especially African-American people who make up the majority* of zip code 37411, are related to diet. *The largest 37411 racial/ethnic groups are Black (54.9%) followed by White (36.3%) and Hispanic (5.3%) - statistics from U.S. Census Bureau, 2019 “People who eat too many unhealthy foods — like foods high in saturated fat and added sugars — are at increased risk for obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems. Strategies and interventions to help people choose healthy foods can help reduce their risk of chronic diseases and improve their overall health. Some people don’t have the information they need to choose healthy foods. Other people don’t have access to healthy foods or can’t afford to buy enough food. Public health interventions that focus on helping everyone get healthy foods are key to reducing food insecurity and hunger and improving health.” https://health.gov/healthypeople/objectives-and-data/browse-objectives/nutrition-and-healthy-eating |
How will you attract community buy-in for your project? | By providing Nutritious produce in the community and teaching basic health and nutrition classes. We will teach the community the importance of buying into the co-op to show they have a say so in what food and resources they want locally. We are building relationships with groups that are already working on food insecurity issues locally. For example, volunteering at the Gaining Ground Grocery at St. Andrews to learn how they are addressing food insecurity there. |

Is there anything else you would like us to know about your project? | As you well know, in the last few years Brainerd Rd has lost Food City, Dollar General, Rite Aid, and recently the nearby Wal-Mart on Shallowford Rd. People with limited transportation options are buying a lot of processed food at Dollar Tree, Hi-Tech, and fast food outlets. We are grateful to have the Brainerd Farmer’s Market in our neighborhood, but one place open two hours a week with their limited selection is not going to solve the problems. The Brainerd Community Food Pantry that is open three hours a month helps but is not going to solve the problems. We need your support and more to solve the problems of health disparities, insufficient meaningful jobs, and food insecurity. |
