Please Describe Your Project In DetailSeeking to bring in needed resources to a community to address negative economic impacts. Orchard Knob and Glenwood community is considered an opportunity zone. We need to bring in much needed retail and food industries such as grocery and drug stores just to name a few. With a limited availability of food service in this area this has also has created a food desert. Residents have very limited options when it comes to needed resources.
This area is now serviced by Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) which falls into District 8 on Dodson Avenue.
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue PlanMy project will address negative economic impacts caused by the public health emergency, such economic harms to workers due to job loss, households income streams reduced, small businesses affected by loss of income. I am a small business owner and can relate to the impact of this public health emergency we are in. In addition my project will support The City of Chattanooga's efforts to focus on disproportionately affected communities.
Where would your project take place?Dodson Avenue Chattanooga, TN
How much will your project cost in total?250000.00
Do you have any matching funding sources from other local governments, private entities, non-profits, or philanthropic entities for your project? No
Please describe the source and list amounts of any other funding.
What portion of the project are you asking the city to fund?
If funded, when would your project start?March 31, 2022
How long would your project take to complete?30-60 days
What milestones would you use to measure your project’s progress? The project progress will be measured based by the needed resources being flocking to the area. My goal after funding is approved to reach out to previous retail companies that showed keen interest in this area, but backed away due to excavation cost. Once the first company buys in on the project because excavation is completed in order for them to build, others will follow. The milestone would be seeing the new business flow into the community.
How would you ensure accountability and transparency throughout the project lifecycle?I will ensure that the chosen company to excavate the land adheres to all local and states laws and regulations. Also, the land has already been surveyed and a Geo-Study has been completed. This will make the process transparent thru the lifecycle. In addition if this is approved, those who sign off will be able to observe the work in progress and see where the money is going. "Full transparency".
If successful, how would your project benefit the community? The benefit is providing needed jobs and resources that this particular area in The City of Chattanooga is lacking.
How will you attract community buy-in for your project?I am a man of vision and I took a risk many years ago and built a very successful business in this community that has thrived for over 50 years. I have already discussed my goals and visions with the Local Chamber of Commerce Lindsay Hiatt as wells as the City of Chattanooga Economic Development Senior Advisor Jermaine Freeman.
Is there anything else you would like us to know about your project? With Chattanooga experiencing extreme growth in the last decade and with minimal land near downtown left to develop, a major project in this area could transform the community. As you know, A thriving entrepreneurial community points to a strong and diverse economy. This area has become a food desert; no food stores are within walking distance or close in proximity to these areas. My hope is to bring in a companies that would grow the community and provide much needed jobs.
