Please Describe Your Project In DetailThrough integrated practice, education, and research, it was discovered that although women of color are the most degreed demographic population in the United States, this population is also the most under-resourced and poorest. Women of color have been reported of being underrepresented, ignored, excluded, unsupported, economically unstable, and unprotected. In line with Resounding Minds' fundamental principles, we recognize that the physical and mental health disparities of our service population create additional barriers that impede our abilities to achieve optimal levels of quality of life across the wellness segments. Funding requested will support Resounding Minds' Women & Community Health Initiative. Our initiative presents a comprehensive trauma-informed women of color public health education approach which includes: six weeks of Mental Health First Aid and Wellness Seminars. Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well. Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, our women will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. We will cover topics such as: depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis, and substance use disorders. Through this six-week course, participants will learn "The Mental Health First Aid Action Plan" which includes: assess for risk of suicide or harm, listen non-judgmentally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help, encourage self-help and other support strategies. Each participant will complete approximately 30 hours within the six-week program. We will form two cohorts of women and provide at least five hours of training per week. These trainings will include at least two seminars in which these women can reflect and implement strategies learned through these trainings. Also, within these trainings, we will use the outdoor approach of assisting with mental health issues.
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue PlanAccording to the American Rescue Plan, "…services may be needed to meet behavioral health needs exacerbated by the pandemic and respond to other public health impacts. These services include mental health treatment, substance misuse treatment...to promote access to physical or behavioral health primary care and preventative medicine." One of the greatest challenges facing the health care industry is the fight against mental illness. To begin with, serious conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety are often difficult to diagnose. But perhaps the most daunting obstacle to treatment of mental health disorders is the societal stigma attached to the diseases. The reluctance of patients to seek treatment for mental health disorders disproportionately affects women, in large part because women are more susceptible than men to many common mental health conditions. The National Institute of Mental Health reported in 2017 that 46.6 million adults in the U.S. were treated for a mental illness, representing nearly 20% of the adult population, yet the percentage of women being treated for mental illness was almost 50% higher than the percentage of men. More than 1 in 5 women in the United States experienced a mental health condition in the past year, such as depression or anxiety. Mental disorders are among the top most costly health conditions for adults 18 to 64 in the United States, along with cancer and trauma-related disorder. Gender differences occur particularly in the rates of common mental disorders - depression, anxiety and somatic complaints. These disorders, in which women predominate, affect approximately 1 in 3 people in the community and constitute a serious public health problem. Pressures created by their multiple roles, gender discrimination and associated factors of poverty, hunger, malnutrition, overwork, domestic violence and sexual abuse, combine to account for women's poor mental health. While all segments of the world’s population are impacted by mental illness, health professionals are discovering that treating women requires a different approach than is used to treat men with the same illnesses.in addition to feeling too ashamed to seek help for a mental disorder, many women simply aren’t aware that their symptoms constitute an illness that can be treated. By implementing our six-week comprehensive program, Resounding Minds can assist towards improving the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions in women. We accomplish this by providing information about the prevalence of mental illness, the negative effects it has on women and their families, and the many resources available to help them receive the treatment they need to return to health.
Where would your project take place?Church of the First Born & outdoors
How much will your project cost in total?25000
Do you have any matching funding sources from other local governments, private entities, non-profits, or philanthropic entities for your project? No
Please describe the source and list amounts of any other funding.
What portion of the project are you asking the city to fund?
If funded, when would your project start?February 7, 2022
How long would your project take to complete?six weeks
What milestones would you use to measure your project’s progress? At the start of our six-week program, we will assess each woman by not only providing a comprehensive form which discusses their past and present journey of their mental health, we will also implement journaling in which these women provide at least three goals they want to accomplish during this six-week program. At the end of each week, we will assess our goals and provide findings of how we are working towards our goals. Additionally, to these weekly check-ins, we will measure our progress we will track how many women complete the trainings each week and focus on the following objectives: reducing the stigma associated with mental health challenges, increasing awareness of local mental health support resources, and increasing suicide prevention. We feel by checking in weekly with these objectives in mind, we can see some of the benefits of participants completing this program. At the end of the program, each participant will not only complete an evaluative form, we will also check in to see what goals were accomplished by each participant.
How would you ensure accountability and transparency throughout the project lifecycle? At the start of our six-week program, we will assess each woman by not only providing a comprehensive form which discusses their past and present journey of their mental health, we will also implement journaling in which these women provide at least three goals they want to accomplish during this six-week program. We feel by checking in weekly with these objectives in mind, we can see some of the benefits of participants completing this program.
If successful, how would your project benefit the community? Our project will benefit the community because participants will learn how to apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in a variety of situations, including when someone is experiencing: panic attacks, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury, acute psychosis (e.g., hallucinations or delusions), overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use, and/or reaction to a traumatic event. The community will also have opportunities to practice — through role plays, scenarios, and activities — which makes it easier to apply these skills in a real-life situation. The project will also impact the health of the community by providing education and awareness, from a trauma-trained approach. For the future, this project will influence a balance of mental and physical health through nutrition, emotional literacy, and body awareness, therefore increasing stress management through the knowledge of adaptive coping mechanisms, inherently reducing the health disparities in the data statistics.
How will you attract community buy-in for your project? We will attract community buy-in for our project by launching a 30-day campaign supporting the importance of addressing our mental health. This campaign will include videos, flyers, social media advertising, and a community day in a park providing information on the importance of mental health. We additional partners in the health care industry that want to support this project and spread the message of mental health and mental fitness. By including the core principals of Resounding Minds’, we will target women, specifically those of color, to see the importance of being mentally fit in order to continue being the foundation of a healthy family. Lastly, we will offer one free outdoor session addressing mental health so future participants can see the benefits of attending our sessions.

Is there anything else you would like us to know about your project?Through education, community, and advocacy, Resounding Minds engages, educates, evolves, and empowers all women (targeting those of color) to thrive without barriers as their authentic selves. We actively participate in local growth and development, and ensure women of color are able to participate in that growth. We address and remove barriers to success for women of color and allow women of color to prosper and thrive as fully realized members of communities and society as a whole. Integrating this information with the findings in the breakthrough 1995-97 Kaiser Permanente/Centers of Disease Control (CDC) study found that “75% of chronic-illness is correlated to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)” and the life-long individual, family, community, and societal impact of trauma across the dimensions of wellness, we find it urgently imperative to create and present a culturally and gender relevant health education program to address challenges that perpetually impact many individuals and homes amongst the our target service population including underserved and marginalized segments of the Chattanooga, TN. These statistics readily support the need to increase the level of attention and services to our population of women and equip them with the knowledge, tools, and support necessary to protect and enhance health status and longevity.
