Please Describe Your Project In Detail | The Light House Collective is a group consisting of young professionals from within The Chattanooga area that is actively providing essential tools for youth and young adults. The Collective was formed to that provide mentoring and life-skill training for youth and young adults in the City of Chattanooga. Our mission is to impact and equip the young people of Chattanooga and the surrounding areas to become productive citizens while deterring lives of crime and/or gang involvement by providing preventive life skills training to combat some of their present traumatic experiences. |
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue Plan | Our project meets the requirements of the American Rescue Plan by responding to negative economic impacts and addressing educational disparities. Our Mission is to impact and equip the young people of Chattanooga to become productive citizens and entrepreneurs and deter them from a life of violence and gang involvement. We have preventative measures to promote healthy childhood environments. |
Where would your project take place? | Our project will take place within elementary, middle, and high schools. We will also have access to churches and college facilities for youth during the summer. |
How much will your project cost in total? | 300000 |
Do you have any matching funding sources from other local governments, private entities, non-profits, or philanthropic entities for your project? | Yes |
Please describe the source and list amounts of any other funding. | Funds secured to date are $100,000 from Hamilton County Commission. |
What portion of the project are you asking the city to fund? | We are asking The City of Chattanooga to fund $100,000 of our operating budget to assist in the preventative education efforts and initiatives that will combat violence in our city. |
If funded, when would your project start? | January 3, 2022 |
How long would your project take to complete? | Our project will take three years to complete |
What milestones would you use to measure your project’s progress? | The Collective milestones are designed to address one hundred (100) youth from throughout our community at a time with attendance and participation records being maintained. Of those one hundred (100) youth, it is hoped that seventy-five (75) percent of them will successfully complete the program. “Completion” will be considered when an in-school participant exhibits a greater appreciation, attendance, and advancement in their academic endeavors; non-academically enrolled participants will have made the decision to either re-enroll in an academic environment, have obtained gainful employment, and/or begin engagement in an entrepreneurial endeavor. In addition, their respective families will have increased in their support of their youth by devoting more time in various supportive measures, i.e., reading, counseling, and work-related activities. |
How would you ensure accountability and transparency throughout the project lifecycle? | We will report quarterly to The Chattanooga City Council with program metrics and success stories throughout the life of this project. |
If successful, how would your project benefit the community? | The Collective strives to address the lack of constructive activities for our youth by providing a safe haven for youth. Young professionals will be recruited to serve in mentoring the youth of our city who are engaged in the program. Specifically, the program will consist of weekly sessions (both inside and outside of the academic settings) where these troubled youth will be exposed to mentors and counselors who both talk and walk with them to dissuade them from pursuing the paths of life that their daily environment often suggests and/or pressures them to follow by teaching these high-risk, inner-city youth the skills to become successful in life. This is at the core objective of The Lighthouse Collective through its four major components: -Guns Down, Business Up… which will teach entrepreneurship, leadership, mentorship, respect, and discipline by having local Chief Executive Officers (“CEO’s) shadowing them in a real-world approach to business. -Nutrition Education… which will promote healthy lifestyles, approaches to dealing with drama and trauma, introduction to yoga to combat psychological issues, and providing weekly counseling sessions with licensed youth instructors. Life Skills… which will be integrated throughout all phases of the program by providing workshops that teach the males and females the essential tools to become a successful; and Community Service… which will incorporate others who want to make a positive impact on these youth from throughout the community by volunteering and helping to facilitate weekly mentorship and special events, while teaching the importance of what "community" means. |
How will you attract community buy-in for your project? | Through formed relationships of The Collective, and other resource-providing entities we will join in partnership with this project. Requests have been made to, and initial supportive responses have been received from, such entities as the Hamilton County School System, Hamilton County Government, various local churches, and philanthropic organizations. |
