Please Describe Your Project In Detail | Reach One Teach One is an after school program that works to help develop and empower youth in the local Chattanooga community. The organization provides multiple opportunities for students to get involved and make a difference in their community. There is an annual holiday food drive to help out local families, a leadership banquet is held to expose youth to various professions with direct mentorship that allows the students to be inspired to find careers in different fields, and school supplies are distributed for families struggling to afford them. Further, leadership programs, known as Boys in Leadership (BIL) and Girls in Leadership (GIL), are offered after school to help kids focus on higher education and receive tutoring, teamwork experience, and accountability coaching. The organization does food drives, teaches personal finance to under-privileged youth, provides tutoring programs, exposes youth to positive career paths, and teaches youth to hold each other accountable for their actions. Peer-to-peer coaching and mentorship help inspire leadership in the youth, and resources are used to improve the mental health of the kids and community. The program meets every week, Monday through Thursday, from 4:00-7:30 PM. |
Please explain how your project meets the requirements of the American Rescue Plan | In the midst of the pandemic, mental health has been falling among youth of under-privileged communities. The tutoring, mentorship, and community support provided by Reach One Teach One works to mitigate the mental health crisis by giving the kids a positive environment and and emotional support. Efforts also are aimed at reducing crime by proactively instilling positive values in the local youth. Leadership and personal accountability are emphasized to the participants of the program, and they are actively exposed to career paths that are alternatives to a criminal lifestyle. Lastly, the organization stages events that helps support local members of the community, especially those hit by the pandemic. Specifically, food drives and school supply distributions help out families that struggle to make ends meet. |
